Terrified.
Trying -
Unconvincingly -
To write my academic bio.
[everything sounds ridiculously fabricated in light of my Mama identity]
Assigned -
Reading, writing, presenting -
Weekly.
[more work than I've ever seen in academics before]
And that’s just one course.
History of Geographic Thought
For me.
Grad student.
With Teaching Assistant responsibilities.
Introduction to Globalization.
For them.
Freshmen.
Awesome topic.
Positively shocking work load.
For Freshmen!
For me!
I have the summer.
Three months to prepare.
I am thankful anyway.
Visit Mon at Holistic Mama to see what others are thankful for this Thursday.

Just for a split second I wished I was back in college freshman year so I could take your course…wish we had a topic as interesting as that to study. But then I remembered the tribulations of freshman year and thought, hum, this is a dilemma! lol!
oh man, i’d love to have you as a prof in college! you’ll do great!!
Me too, would love to have you as a teach! You can do this!
Lisa
You can do it!!!!!!!!!!
man- that is heavy stuff! but you can do it! you wouldn’t have been chosen (or put yourself in that position) if you weren’t capable. so go for it- be a great, big, shining success!
You will do wonderfully hun! It does sound a lot more interesting than freshman engineering was
Oh, this sounds very interesting! But at the same time as a full time mama it makes my head hurt ; ) YOU WILL DO AMAZING!!
Oh I had to laugh at this – only because I can so identify with exactly what you’re feeling. Including the mother part (so many academic women who are mothers feel this slight ‘fraud’ factor, even though we’re just as capable as anyone).
A few of years ago, armed with my PhD in Literature, I was hired as a Lecturer in History and Pols. I had to transform myself into an expert in a field that wasn’t my own (I had dabbled but not much more). I lectured on Globalisation among other topics.
And as a result of my own experience and seeing others do this too, I can pretty confidently say that you will get your head around it and take yourself by surprise at how quickly you’ll manage to make it your own. It’s a huge amount of work, but it’s exciting!
Good luck!
You’ll do wonderfully!
Enjoy your summer.
Good luck! And I don’t think that fraud feeling is limited to mothers. Might be more common in women. But I’m not sure about that either.
As soon as you step outside of the ivory halls, you think – could they really take me seriously?
And try not to stress about the teaching too much. It’s good to be prepared, but you’ll probably over-prepare (everyone does). You know a lot more that they do. I always found it surprising how long it took to work through simple concepts, and adjusted my seminar planning accordingly.
Sounds amazing though. You’ll be brilliant!
